Itinerary

6 Days Tour from Agadir to Erg Chegaga

Day 1: Agadir → Tata

Your desert tour commences with a breathtaking drive across the ruggedly beautiful Anti-Atlas mountains. Your first stop is a journey back in time at Oum el-Alek, where ancient rock carvings depict a long-vanished world of savannah wildlife. You’ll then wind through the life-giving Akka oasis, a lush concentration of date palms and desert springs, pausing in traditional villages like Herbal and Tircht to experience local life. After lunch, the ever-changing terrain leads you to Tata, where you will settle into a comfortable desert camp for a delicious dinner under the profound tranquility of the starry desert sky.

Day 2: Tata → Foum Zguid → Erg Chegaga

The morning light reveals the raw, powerful beauty of southern Morocco as you make your way towards Foum Zguid. We’ll stop to capture photographs of the immense, cracked surface of the Iriqui salt lake, a surreal and shimmering expanse. The true off-road adventure begins as your 4×4 vehicle navigates this ancient lakebed to reach the remote and towering dunes of Erg Chegaga, some of which soar to 300 meters.

As the sun begins its descent, you’ll mount your camel for a timeless caravan journey into the sea of sand, watching as the landscape is painted in hues of gold and crimson. Awaiting you at your luxury camp is a warm welcome, a delicious feast, and the enchanting sound of Berber music played around a blazing campfire.

Day 3: Erg Chegaga → M’hamid → Tamegroute → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate

An early rise is rewarded with one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the sunrise setting the vast dunes ablaze in shades of rose-gold and fiery orange. After breakfast, your journey continues across the desert frontier to M’Hamid, the last town before the Sahara stretches into infinity. In the historic village of Tamegroute, you’ll discover a subterranean 17th-century library housing priceless illuminated manuscripts and witness local artisans crafting the region’s signature green-glazed pottery. From here, the legendary Draa Valley emerges—a magnificent, 200km-long river of palms dotted with ancient mud-brick kasbahs that leads you to the cinematic city of Ouarzazate for a relaxing evening in an elegant riad.

Day 4: Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Atlas Mountains → Marrakech

Today is a day of cinematic grandeur, beginning with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Benhaddou. Explore this masterpiece of earthen architecture, a fortified city that has served as a backdrop for epics like Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. Ascend its winding alleys to the ancient granary for breathtaking panoramic views. The adventure continues with the spectacular ascent over the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260m), where each hairpin turn reveals new vistas of Berber villages nestled into the steep slopes. You will then descend into the vibrant, rose-tinted city of Marrakech, arriving with the evening free to unwind at your hotel.

Day 5: Marrakech Exploration

Immerse yourself completely in the vibrant soul of Marrakech with a guided city tour. You will uncover the gilded mosaics of the Saadian Tombs, admire the intricate craftsmanship of the Bahia Palace, and stand in awe of the Koutoubia Mosque’s iconic minaret. Prepare to be captivated by the whirlwind of activity in Djemaa el-Fna square, a living theater of snake charmers, spice merchants, and storytellers. In the afternoon, escape to the tranquil oasis of the Majorelle Garden, a botanical wonderland of fascinating plants and vivid cobalt blue, once owned by Yves Saint Laurent. Your evening is at leisure to discover your own perfect rooftop dinner or get lost in the bustling souks.

Day 6: Marrakech → Agadir

Enjoy a final, leisurely morning absorbing the unique atmosphere of Marrakech, perhaps finding a quiet courtyard for a fresh orange juice or doing some last-minute souvenir hunting. The scenic coastal route back to Agadir takes you through the unique Argan forests, where you might spot the region’s famous tree-climbing goats.
