Are you looking for an off the beaten path trip ? This five-day journey from Marrakech to the Sahara offers an authentic way to discover southern Morocco, traveling through the High Atlas Mountains, dramatic gorges, palm-filled valleys, and the dunes of Erg Chebbi. The route follows historic caravan roads and remote back roads, revealing landscapes and communities rarely seen on standard tours.
What makes this experience apart is its focus on local life and cultural connection. Guests stay in family-run guesthouses, traditional kasbahs, and desert camps, and share meaningful moments with Berber and nomadic Amazigh families. Highlights include visiting Rissani’s traditional market, exploring the Sahara with locals, and spending a night with a nomadic family in the middle of the desert.
Beyond sightseeing, this tour supports local communities and helps preserve cultural heritage, from ancient kasbahs like Amridil to traditional desert lifestyles. It is ideal for travelers seeking a genuine, responsible, and memorable Moroccan experience rooted in people, culture, and timeless landscapes.
Our 5 days desert local experience from Marrakech to explore the hidden gems of Morocco as local. Your journey begins in Marrakech, heading south through the spectacular High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Along the way, you will stop in small Berber villages to stretch your legs and enjoy while learning about life in the mountains.
After lunch in a local restaurant, the drive continues to Kasbah Amridil where you will have a guided tour of this old fortress. You will have a deep understanding about the Kasbahs and the way of living among the Berber tribes a long time ago. After that you drive through the Valley of the Roses before reaching Dades Gorge. In the late afternoon, enjoy a short walk among the dramatic rock formations known as the “Monkey Fingers”. Dinner and overnight will be in a traditional kasbah or Riad in Dades Gorge.
After breakfast, you depart Dades Gorge following the scenic and less-traveled road through Msemrir, passing remote villages and high desert landscapes. This route offers a glimpse of authentic rural Morocco, far from the main tourist roads. You will arrive at Todra Gorge, where sheer canyon walls rise dramatically above a palm-lined river. After time to walk through the gorge and enjoy lunch at a local house of a Berber family.
The journey continues east toward Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. In the late afternoon, you will ride camels into the dunes as the sun sets over the Sahara. Dinner and overnight take place in a traditional desert camp, with Berber music around the fire and a sky filled with stars.
Wake early to watch the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast at the camp. The morning is dedicated to exploring the desert by 4×4, visiting fossil plains, old kohl mines, and the village of Khamlia, home to the Gnawa people, where you can enjoy traditional music.
In the afternoon, you travel off-road to visit a nomadic Amazigh family living in the desert. You will share tea, learn about their way of life, and take part in preparing a traditional meal, including baking bread in the sand. Dinner and overnight are spent in a traditional nomadic tent, offering a rare and deeply authentic desert experience under the stars.
After breakfast with the nomadic family, you head toward Rissani toward Rissani or Sijlmassa, the ancient cradle of Morocco’s ruling dynasty and a historic crossroads for Saharan trade caravans. If we come a cross Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday which are the market days in the city. We will explore one of the oldest authentic traditional souk in Morocco. Where you can see a local atmosphere. Here you visit the local market, where nomads and villagers gather to trade livestock, dates, and spices. Continuing west, the route follows the lush Draa Valley, Morocco’s longest palm oasis, with thousands of palm trees lining the riverbanks.
Toady lunch will be a picnic in the middle of nowhere, you will enjoy a walk through the palm groves and learn about traditional irrigation systems. The day ends in Ouarzazate, where you check into a charming kasbah-style guesthouse for dinner and overnight.
On the final day, you visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Aït Ben Haddou, exploring the ancient ksar with a local guide who shares stories of its history and film heritage. The journey then continues along the scenic Telouet road, once the route of powerful Atlas lords. A visit to the historic Telouet Kasbah offers insight into Morocco’s past before enjoying lunch in a traditional mountain village. In the afternoon, you cross the High Atlas Mountains once again, arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your 5-day authentic Moroccan adventure from Marrakech.
